HZN-1·Fuel Horizon·Dashboard

Jet fuel burning in the sky right now

Every flight the network can see, run through a fuel model of its exact aircraft type. Updated every hour.

The last 24 hours

Each point is one hourly recording. Traffic rises and falls as the day moves around the world.

Planes in the air

Fuel burned per hour (tonnes, modelled flights)

Who's burning it

Airlines ranked by the fuel their planes in the air are burning per hour right now. Big long-haul fleets rank high even with fewer flights.

Fuel per seat

Grams of CO₂ per seat per kilometre for each airline's flights in the air, from the fuel model and typical seat counts for each aircraft type. Newer aircraft and longer trips score better; real cabins vary, so treat small gaps as noise. Airlines with at least 8 rated flights.

What if?

Four ways to cut aviation's CO₂, applied to the flights in the air right now. Each uses published figures (sources below), and each aircraft is still years from service, so read these as rough upper bounds for today's traffic.

Sustainable aviation fuel

…less lifecycle CO₂ across every flight

Today SAF is about 0.6% of jet fuel. EU rules require 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050; blends above 50% aren't certified yet.

Battery-electric

…of flights could fly on batteries

Each battery weighs as much as a full fuel tank. Certified aviation packs are near 200 Wh/kg today; lithium-based packs probably top out around 400 to 500. Lifecycle savings are 49 to 88% depending on how clean the grid is.

Hybrid-electric regional aircraft

…less fuel CO₂ across every flight

Assumes every regional jet and turboprop flight up to 1,200 km (the Heart Aerospace ES-36's hybrid range) uses about 30% less fuel, the RTX demonstrator's target.

Hydrogen aircraft

…less lifecycle CO₂ across every flight

Assumes hydrogen aircraft like Airbus's ZEROe concept (100+ seats, about 1,850 km) fly every narrowbody and regional flight in range. ZEROe has slipped to the 2040s.
